Meet your representatives

Marcel Frei

My wife Amanda and I have two girls at Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto – Sofia, a new entrant in the Koru hub and Isabella, year 2 in the Kahikatea hub.

Like many of you, we were drawn to Beckenham’s strong community focus and the carefully considered visions and values role modelled by the teachers that work tirelessly to fill every child’s ‘kete for the journey’. The dedication and commitment I have observed from teachers seeking to understand and nurture the learning of each child is remarkable. I am grateful for the strong positive culture that exists at the school and the decisive leadership of the school management that has worked intentionally to implement it. Serving on the board of trustees is an opportunity to assist the continued development of the strategic direction and great policies already in place.

My background is in the commercial management of largescale and complex construction projects, both locally and abroad. Much of my experience is in project planning, forecasting, reporting, contract negotiation, value engineering and risk and opportunity management. I have been involved with the recovery of distressed projects including the leadership of teams required to deliver within challenging environments. Through this I’ve learnt that the best results are achieved when individuals that are responsible for an outcome, are supported and empowered to do their best.

I am currently an Associate Director at AECOM, a multidisciplinary construction and engineering consultancy. I have a Bachelor of Construction (Quantity Surveying) and am an active member of the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors where I serve on the Canterbury branch board. I have authored and reviewed technical papers and journal articles and have presented at international conferences in the field of construction cost management.

I am comfortable digesting technical issues and excel at breaking down complex problems into approachable frameworks. When communicating, I’m considerate of others, so I tend to take a diplomatic approach and think carefully before speaking. I take time to examine the facts carefully before making decisions. Accuracy and rigour are important to me, so I tend to ask questions and challenge assumptions and speak up when I encounter conclusions where an objective or logical basis is not clear.

The opportunity to support the principal to lead and manage our school to preserve and grow its wonderful character is the reason I have put my name forward for the board of trustees.

Lisa Taylor

My name is Lisa Taylor (nee Knowles), I am married to David and we have two children Tahere and Kawariki, who are both at Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto. I feel very connected to Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto, not only as a past student along with my six older siblings, but our Dad also started at Beckenham in 1934. I grew up locally and went to Canterbury University before going on my O.E and living in London for 10 years. From London we travelled a lot, mostly by bike, but we always returned home to visit and came home to live in 2008.

David and our children are Ngaiterangi and Ngāti Ranginui (Mt Maunganui). Living in Christchurch, it is important to us that our children are part of a school with a positive focus on Te Ao Maori and is inclusive and celebrates all cultures. I have seen Beckenham Te Kura o Pūroto change physically over the years, including the red brick buildings being knocked down, the huge post-earthquake rebuild, and the name change to Beckenham Te Kuro o Pūroto. I respect and admire the culture at our school, its resilience, caring nature, and putting our children at the centre of everything it does while not being afraid to change and try new ideas.

I believe my personal and professional skills will be an attribute to the Board of Trustees. In my career as a business analyst my focus is on building relationships, understanding challenges, opportunities, and communicating business requirements. I have worked across many industries and am currently working in health and safety.

Carmel Wade

Kia ora koutou,

My name is Carmel Wade, and it is with respect I ask for your support in being elected as a Parent Trustee for Beckenham te Kura o Pūroto. My husband, Adrian and I, have 2 tamariki at Beckenham te Kura o Pūroto; Jacqui is year 2, and Alex is a new entrant.

We feel extremely lucky to already be part of a fantastic school culture and the local community, having only moved to Christchurch 4 years ago. I see standing for the Board as a fantastic opportunity to assist our school at a governance level. Helping to enable them to deliver the best education possible with a balance of academic achievement, Art, Culture and Sport. I believe we can build on the work already happening within the school, with a strong focus on the Spiritual, Physical, Mental / Emotional and Social Wellbeing of the individual learners. We are very fortunate to be in the position that our Earthquake Rebuild project is complete, and we now get to focus our time on providing quality education for our tamariki.

Professionally - I am an Architect and have been working on Education Buildings for over 15 years. I am familiar with the property aspect of schools and working with the Ministry of Education. More recently I have been a parent representative working on the Beckenham Outdoor Spaces Committee. My interests are ensuring that we get the best out of our schools learning environments, both indoors and outdoors, while predominately focusing on student wellbeing and academic achievement.

As an architect, we are trained to think creatively, understand and solve problems while working collaboratively. Throughout my career this has helped me understand other people’s point of view, in particular, ensuring we are aware of the strategic direction and broader picture. This allows me to analyse issues from different perspectives. These skills are an asset towards decision making, future development and strategic direction for the school.

If elected, I look forward to representing our parents and caregivers to the utmost of my ability and being part of the Beckenham te Kura o Pūroto team.
